I know that I said I wanted to make my “This day in History” post an every Tuesday thing, but I think it would be better if I pushed that to tomorrow. (There’s a lot of stuff that happened on February 29th, if you can believe that) There’s a couple of things that have to do with TV, which include;
- In 1940, basketball is televised for the first time (Fordham University vs. the University of Pittsburgh in Madison Square Garden).
- In 1954, the first color television sets using the NTSC standard are offered for sale to the general public.
For some reason I started thinking about all the motives I have to NOT watch TV now. Of course there is the obvious reason, which is, I don’t have as much time to watch, as I used to. I was once a very boring person that would get off of work and either head home to veg out in front of the TV, or head to the bar and watch whatever sports game was on. Now, I have things to do. I have meetings, functions, events, dinners, lessons and other various social activities. And let me tell you, most of these are more entertaining than TV anyway. (All of the information that will be listed after this is true but, the names, places and times have been changed to protect the innocent.) In no particular order;
-
The other night I was at a function, to raise awareness of our club, the Jaycees. This particular function was a Suicide Karaoke, meaning that people could pay a buck and turn your name in with a song, and you had to sing it. If you don’t want to sing you buy “insurance” that blocks you from having to. I had an abundance of this “insurance”, but there is always someone trying to stir the pot. A member offered to pay about $60 bucks to sing a song himself, and have me sing backup. I finally caved in and went up to the stage for Play That Funky Music (White Boy). I didn’t do much singing (come to find out the mic was turned off anyway) but at least there are pictures of me up there, looking like I’m singing. It was for a good cause and only mildly embarrassing.
- I’ve been asked to read along with a more “seasoned” member of the Church, the Book of Mormon. On Mondays we have what is known as Family Home Evening, so we decided to just have me come over for this. We eat dinner; have a lesson, and afterward chit-chat about all sorts of various things. On one particular evening we are sitting down, getting ready for dinner and Husband says “Yeah, this is really good. It’s this stuffing and gravy stuff, what do you call it?” Wife says “Umm, Stuffing and Gravy.” Ha-ha. Who needs TV when you have real life “lines” like this? (And it was really good, too)
- This weekend was our Stake conference, my first, and it was jammed packed of new and interesting stuff for me. (I probably have talked about a lot of this stuff already, so “If you’re just now tuning in!” here you go) Saturday, at the 4pm Leadership meeting I gave my testimony. Directly after that, at 6pm, I received my Patriarchal Blessing, and that brought us into the 7pm, adult meeting. During the 7pm meeting I was sitting next to our Bishop, which helped me concentrate, a little. (Don’t want to be nodding off in front of the Bishop!) I also had a chance to catch up with a guy I went to middle school with. This was the first time that I had seen him in about 15 years, and that was really neat. On Sunday we had the regular meeting and we heard from a member of the 70. One of the things he mentioned for us to do was to seek out and get our Patriarchal Blessing, if we hadn’t done so yet. (Good job to me) Later on that night I had an opportunity to attend a Fireside, and was even asked to speak a little, about this blog. This was the first time, EVER, that I wasn’t nervous to get up and talk in front of people.
I’ve heard that we can progress and we can regress, there is no standing still, spiritually. We should think about this when we are deciding how we want to spend our time.
Alma 60: 30;
Behold, I wait for assistance from you; and, except ye do administer unto our relief, behold, I come unto you, even in the land of Zarahemla, and smite you with the sword, insomuch that ye can have no more power to impede the progress of this people in the cause of our freedom.
Ephesians 5: 15-17;
15) See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16) Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17) Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
